Did you know visitors only read 20% of the words on your website?
It’s true. We skim, scroll and breeze right by important information that doesn’t grab our attention and pull us in quickly.
This means you have to nail the copy on your website, landing pages, ads and emails if you want people to engage. Because chances are, they’ll bounce if you don’t capture their attention within the first 15 seconds.
We often hear comments like this from nonprofit leaders:
“How do we increase engagement?”
“Why aren’t people signing up for our newsletter?”
“People come to our site and leave before donating.”
How do you fix this?
Short answer: you write better marketing copy.
It sounds simple, but there’s a lot that goes into good copywriting. Watch the full replay of our most recent webinar to get the low-down on how to write words that captivate, connect and convert more people into supporters.
Quick Copy Win
But if you’re looking for a quick fix, here are a few things you can do to optimize the placement of your website words immediately.
Left Side, Strong Side
Put your most important information on the left side of the screen and scoot secondary content to the right. Research tells us that users spend between 69-80% of their time viewing the left side of the screen, so we can maximize users’ efficiency and engagement by adhering to these design conventions.
Break Up Content
Keep visitors engaged by intentionally using headlines, subheaders, chunking information and whitespace around your copy.
One Drop (a diabetes management platform and app) does a great job using headlines, sub-headlines, and whitespace to grab your attention and hold it with these basic copywriting and user behavior principles.
Donors have plenty of choices when it comes to giving their time, talents and resources. With over 1.5 million charities in the U.S., you have to set your organization apart from the crowd.
Good copywriting will attract your ideal audience, connect with people on a deep level and inspire them to get behind your mission. But it does more than that - (watch full webinar to learn more).
