Your Value Isn't What AI Can Replace

In my last post, I argued that a ministry that implements AI well does not replace people — it reassigns them to the work that actually requires them. Today I want to go deeper on something that's underneath that question for a lot of people.

"What happens to my value if a machine can do what I do?"

It's a real fear — especially for teams that have built their professional identity around production skill. The writer who is valued for writing fast and well. The designer who can turn a campaign around overnight. The analyst who produces reports in a day that take others a week.

Here's what I’m telling our team at Five Q: your value was never really in the production. It was always in the judgment, the relationships, and the mission clarity that shaped what got produced. The production was just how that value became visible.

What changes in an AI-empowered model is not your value. It's where your value shows up.

NOTE: I DO see value in producing — but the value is for you, the producer. Producing is how we develop deep experience and good judgment. Chris Martin tackles this masterfully in his recent post, Not Everything Needs to be Useful. Of course, the question might be asked, “What happens with the next generation of workers who have only used AI to produce, and don’t have that judgment?”— well, that is a post for another time. :-) 

It shows up in the donor call that builds the relationship AI couldn't build. In the review that catches theological drift in content AI generated confidently and incorrectly. In the leadership decision that requires wisdom AI will never have. In the pastoral sensitivity that recognizes when a strategy, however effective, isn't right for this community at this moment.

That is not diminished work. That is elevated work.

A Note on Transparency

We tell our clients that AI is contributing to our work. Not because we're required to — because we believe transparency about AI is actually a competitive advantage.

Donors and partners want to know a human is accountable for what they receive. Being clear about that builds trust in an environment where trust is hard to earn. The ministries that lead in this next decade will not be the ones that adopt AI fastest. They'll be the ones that adopt it with wisdom, transparency, and a clear answer to: who is accountable?

Always a human. That's our answer.

Where to Start

Map your workflows. For each major workflow — donor communications, web content, event planning, financial reporting — ask: what percentage is production work AI could handle, and what percentage requires human judgment, relationships, or mission discernment? Most organizations find that 60–80% is in the first category. That's not a reason to panic. It's a map of where AI can help.

Define your human zones. Who is accountable for what? Who reviews every AI-generated output before it reaches a donor or the public? Make those decisions explicit — in writing.

Start with one workflow. Pick the one where AI could save the most time, redesign it with Human-First principles, and run it for ninety days. Learn from it. Then expand.

Train your people on direction, not just usage. Using AI means accepting what comes back. Directing AI means writing a clear brief, providing context, setting guardrails, and reviewing the output with judgment. That's the difference between AI that amplifies your mission and AI that dilutes it.

The Question Worth Bringing to Your Team

What would your people be able to do for your mission if they weren't spending most of their time on production work?

More donor conversations. Deeper discipleship content. More time for the pastoral work of caring for the community. More creative energy for the mission that brought everyone to this organization in the first place.

That is the promise of Human-First, AI-Empowered. Not fewer people. Better work. More of the work that only humans can do.

The human in the loop isn't a compliance checkbox. It's the most important part of the whole system.
