Your First Step Toward Transformative AI? Clean Your Data.

Your First Step Toward Transformative AI? Clean Your Data.

AI is no longer coming for the nonprofit sector — it's here. And if you want it to be truly transformative, there's a clear first step: clean, organized, and trustworthy data.

This isn't a technical hurdle. It's a foundation — and building it is more achievable than you might think.

This is Unfolding in Real-Time

According to the 2026 Nonprofit AI Adoption Report by Virtuous and Fundraising.AI, 92% of nonprofits are now using AI in some capacity — but only 7% report major improvements in organizational capability. There are many changes you can make to close this gap, but one that is guaranteed to pay off in multiples is clean data.

As the technology advances, this won't be optional in the future. Blackbaud launched Agents for Good, purpose-built AI agents that can autonomously identify donor prospects, craft personalized outreach, and manage follow-up inside Raiser's Edge NXT. Salesforce rebranded its entire nonprofit platform as Agentforce for Nonprofits, with agents for fundraising research, volunteer coordination, and program management.

These aren't technology vendors dipping their toes in the water, they are placing major bets on an agentic future.

What Your Data Probably Looks Like

If you are like me, you probably have notes, doodles, ideas, and whatnot all over the place. This is great for the creative process, but wreaks havoc on anyone else (or even sometimes myself) who tries to decipher it. The good news is you don't have to give that up, but you do need to sandbox it. Simply showing AI where it can find the source of truth for items will go a long way in the results that you see.

Three Things You Can Do Right Now

1. Collaborate with AI on Organization - Ask AI to give you an overview of your current organizational structure, along with what areas are confusing, and a recommended standardized approach.

2. Use AI to Keep Things Organized - You can schedule tasks for AI to review weekly or monthly changes to your shared drives and let you know what files are misnamed or out of place.

3. Monitor Your Results - It can be frustrating at first, but taking the time to get AI to give you the best results, instead of manually editing things, will accelerate both your work and the work your AI agents do.

The Future Belongs to Organizations That Prepare for It

The 92% adoption rate is proof that your sector is ready. The 7% impact rate is proof there's still a gap to close — and closing it doesn't require a bigger budget or a new platform. It requires building on a clean foundation.

Now is the right time to get there.
